New figures from the Office of National Statistics show that in 8 weeks the number of people with Long Covid has grown by 20,000. Now local Liberal Democrats have called for a national Action Plan to provide them with proper support.
Rutherglen Liberal Democrat Councillor Robert Brown said that long Covid was “the hidden ailment” that had got lost in all the focus on vaccines, testing and travel.
Robert Brown said:
“The next challenge in the long Covid saga is to support people who have had Covid but have been left with the hangover – lingering symptoms, tiredness and disability that severely hamper their quality of life.
The hope is that research will provide protections and treatments that will help long Covid sufferers. However people need help now. We need to look at training specialist long Covid community nurses, providing physiotherapy and rehabilitation services and specialist clinics.
There are employment implications too so that people don’t suffer unnecessary financial loss through difficulty in returning to work.
The whole thing needs a co-ordinated response and a National Plan to tackle it.
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has been pressing the Scottish Government on the plight of long Covid sufferers for some time but the response of the SNP Government has so far been unequal to the challenge.
Long Covid sufferers need new hope and real action now. “
