Urgent need for EU citizens in Scotland to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme

21st May 202

South Lanarkshire Liberal Democrats are encouraging any European Union citizens living in South Lanarkshire prior to 31st December 2020 to apply urgently for settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme. The scheme has a closing date of 30th June.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader Robert Brown has written to the Council’s Chief Executive asking that the Council makes every effort to get information to people who might be affected.

Robert Brown said:

“There are less than 6 weeks to the deadline and European citizens in that situation have the right to apply for settled or pre-settled status but only if they do so before 30th June.

This is another unfortunate side product of Brexit. There are many people who came to the UK from Poland particularly but indeed from every other European country when we had freedom of movement under the EU Treaties. Like many others I have been horrified to see reports of EU citizens being detailed on entry for reasons that are far from clear.

I have asked the Chief Executive to explore every avenue open to the Council to make sure that information on this gets to the people affected living in South Lanarkshire. Some might be council employees, or employees of care agencies, some will be known through local churches. We can also make use of social media.

I would strongly encourage anyone intending to go down that route to do so sooner rather than later.”
