David Glennie is Liberal Democrat By-Election Champion!

Following the sad death of Provost Margaret Cooper, independent councillor for Avondale and Stonehouse, a by-election has been scheduled for 17th September 2026. 

Retired Sales Director David Glennie is bidding to win the seat for the Liberal Democrats. David is married with two adult children and was born and brought up in Lanarkshire. He worked for 30 years in the steel industry followed by a period as Regional Manager for Betterware and later in parcel delivery for Yodel.

David is campaigning across the ward - in support of Strathaven community groups, weed control in Chapelton, road resurfacing in Sandhouse, and bridge repairs in Sandford. 

After this summer's record breaking temperatures, David is also supporting Liberal Democrat calls for an Emergency Heat Plan. This comes after Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson, Tim Farron MP, unveiled a "Climate Ready" package to provide security to all future homes in Britain. The move would shift planning regulations to prepare Britain for the climate shocks ahead, including a requirement for air conditioning in all new-build homes.
