Rutherglen and Hamilton West candidate attacks SNP record

3 Oct 2023

Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for Rutherglen and Hamilton West Gloria Adebo has today attacked the Scottish Government’s record and warned that cuts to local authority budgets are behind a string of closures threatening local services in the area.

Her comments come just days before the upcoming by-election. On Monday afternoon former Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie will join Ms Adebo to campaign.

Gloria Adebo said:

‘People in Rutherglen and Hamilton West have been badly hammered by unnecessary and damaging SNP Government cuts.

“SNP cuts now look set to cause the closure of all local police stations in the area- on top of the threat to care homes, day services. swimming pools and leisure facilities.

“It is time to stop the SNP’s centralising policies in their tracks and give a fair share of the Scottish budget to local services and local people.

"Sending an SNP MP to Westminster will not help people in Rutherglen and Hamilton West because they have no interest in working constructively.

“Unlike the SNP, I won’t pretend that the problems facing people right now could somehow be solved by putting up more barriers with separation.

“Rather than perpetuate division, Scottish Liberal Democrats would work in partnership across the United Kingdom on key issues like the cost of living and reforming the UK to make it work better, strengthen ties with our European neighbours and build a better way forward together."

Willie Rennie added:

“Gloria is a breath of fresh air for Rutherglen and Hamilton West.

“From campaigning against proposed SNP council tax rises to demanding action on the cost of living, she’s already focusing on all the things that a great local MP should be focused on.

“The SNP have been letting people down for too long. I would urge voters to back Gloria on Thursday.”
